It is important to choose the right ski poles. Indeed, there are different types of poles for different ski disciplines. Its size is also important to feel comfortable and efficient on each run. You will then have a better balance and stability, and your planting will be optimal.

THE SIZE OF THE SKI POLES

There is a simple technique to find out if the stick fits you: Pick up the stick and then turn it safe on the ground. Grab the stick under the puck, so the stick is vertical:

• If your elbow is at a right angle:
  If your elbow is at a right angle, your stick is the right size.
• If your elbow has an angle that is too open:
  The stick is too small.
• If your angle is too narrow:
  Your stick is too big.

THE MATERIAL OF THE SKI POLE

There are different pole materials, all of which are different and will have an impact on your practice.

• Carbon: light poles, which absorb vibrations better, but are especially recommended for ski touring.
• Aluminium: multi-purpose poles for a variety of uses. You will notice numbers that differentiate the different aluminiums:
  • 5083 for lightness,
  • 5086 for lightness but with more strength and
  • 7000 for good strength.
• Composite materials: made of a mixture of carbon and other materials such as glass fibres or titanium. They are both strong and light.
  Do you come to ski for a week or two a year? Simple aluminium poles will be fine (5083 or 5086).

Do you ski more regularly? Then look for lightness but above all strength. A 7000 aluminium or carbon pole will be perfect for you.

THE HANDLE OF THE SKI POLE

You can choose the width of the handle according to your preferences. There are different materials for the handle, which will affect your comfort.

• Rubber is resistant and pleasant.
• Plastic is rigid but less comfortable.
• Cork is very comfortable, light and insulating. Ideal for intense skiing.
• Foam is mainly used for ski touring.

THE WASHER OF THE SKI POLE

This is the round part just above the tip. Its diameter has a meaning and an impact on your ski.

About 50mm in diameter:
Intended for speed, for the piste, for a more thorough practice.

About 80mm diameter :
Ideal for all practices and all levels.

About 100mm diameter :
Wider and therefore more suitable for freeriding to avoid sinking into fresh snow.
